Syrian artist Giath Taha’s body of work Becoming a Ghost consists of three components: a research project, a four-channel video installation and cyanotype maps. The project is based around PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a first-person shooter game in which 100 players are deposited on an island to fight it out for survival. It was in this game that Taha realised that he could reunite with his brother, whom he hadn’t seen for 11 years. The video work consists of gameplay and voiceover while the cyanotype prints create ghostly blue versions of the places Taha and his brother can meet, showcasing the uncertain but fertile ground between virtual and physical reality and its parallel in the binary between heavenly and earthly realms. ◉
